Carriers robbed and intimidated illegal immigrants detained in the Aushdaugava region

As part of the pre-trial investigation into the case of a group of illegal immigrants detained in the Augšdaugava region in the summer, it turned out that the carriers used physical force against them, threatened and robbed them, and teenagers were also involved in the crime, reports the State Border Guard of Latvia.

At the end of July this year, the State Border Service began a criminal trial to provide 27 people who illegally crossed the state border with the opportunity to illegally stay on the territory of Latvia.

Border guards stopped in Augshdaugava region a Chrysler Grand Voyager, driven by a Latvian citizen. Inside the car there were 16 people of Asian origin without travel documents, as well as without valid visas or residence permits.

After some time, in one of the farmsteads of the Augšdaugava region, on suspicion of providing assistance to persons illegally crossing the state border, a second citizen of Latvia was detained, and during an inspection of the territory in the basement, 11 more people of Asian origin were found – also without travel documents, as well as without valid visas and residence permits.

As part of the pre-trial investigation, it turned out that members of an organized group committed robberies of people illegally crossing the state border, threatening them with an object similar to a weapon and using physical force. As a result, their money and mobile phones were taken from them.

During the investigative actions, border guards identified the organizers and accomplices of the crime, among whom were two minors. On October 14, as part of a criminal trial, border guards detained five more Latvian citizens. Procedural actions were also carried out with three persons who are in prison and serving sentences for other crimes.

Now in the criminal process the issue of additional qualification under the article of the Criminal Law on robbery committed with the use of firearms is being resolved, and on the recognition of all these persons as suspects.

As already reported, this year – until October 9 – 72 criminal proceedings were initiated against 44 persons regarding the illegal movement of immigrants across the state border and the possibility of illegal stay in Latvia.

Previously, the government decided to extend the regime of enhanced border security at the border of Belarus until December 31. Previously, this regime was established until September 12.
