Catalonia is boring, by Susana Quadrado

Catalonia is becoming boring. Politically speaking. Few images better summarize the pax catalan than that of the deputies – all, except those from the CUP – singing Christmas carols together in the Parliament this past December 19.

That had not been done since 2006, in the first year of Montilla’s first tripartite. I will spare the reader, it is well-known, what happened when the Catalan agenda was kidnapped by the independence utopia and its subsequent consequences.

The choir of parliamentarians has returned, here’s the thing. The melody of sanity . More than an anecdote. A symptom that the dramas that excited us years ago now also cause fatigue in the Catalan class itself. The allusions to fraternity – and practically only that – in President Illa’s (boring) Christmas speech indicate to what extent the appeal to the flag issues has been exhausted.

The preachers of the collapse are left alone while the country looks the other way. The circus and its bar grammar have left the city to settle in Madrid. Here the restlessness of the independence movement is so calmed that the situation evokes that joke of the dentist: “Are we not going to hurt ourselves?

Catalonia can recover the rhythm this 2025, as in the ‘nadales’ song of the Parliament

The PSC governs almost all institutions. Without large majorities, so you have to negotiate on many sides. Thus, ideological borders are blurred in favor of the ability to know how to negotiate. Salvador Illa is seen juggling. In the coming months we will see if the president knows how to play with clubs without dropping them to the ground. The moment is favorable for him as long as he does not lose sight of Catalonia. The ERC opposition does not exist. The PP is neither there nor expected. Junts is in Madrid (and in Waterloo). Catalunya en Comú is not funny. And only Vox, CUP (what’s left of it) and Aliança Catalana continue with their monthly portion of fear and anger.

The end of the Colau era in Barcelona has also contributed to reducing tension. This peace facilitates a realistic public debate that drags the political agenda towards what really matters: the improvement of education, the survival of the health system, the housing crisis, the rise in poverty and homelessness or the necessary scientific and technological competitiveness, to name just a few examples. Every day that passes without progress is a day lost, and one less day of credit for Illa.

For time, a society will remain divided into two or three halves. But it could be said that Catalonia can regain its rhythm in 2025, as in the song of christmas of the Parliament. We will get more bored. However, that will be beautiful. Saving and beautiful. We all wish each other a happy new year.
