Catching balls is a thing of the past: the League Cup has something new that is practiced outside

When the ball goes beyond the boundaries imposed by the law, in the three games of the final phase of the League Cup, in Leiria, the throw-in of the ball on the field will be different.

Instead of seekers, which in a game on a neutral field would hardly generate advantages or unbalance the normal course of the match, the final four of the League Cup will have flags (or cones, go) around the field where the balls will be placed. That’s where the players will collect the ball and then mark the full-back.

“One of the most striking new features will be the introduction of a ball throw-in system using flags specially positioned around the playing rectangle”, can be read on the Liga Portugal website.

He continues: “The measure, which is used, for example, in the English Premier League, the Italian Serie A and the German Bundesliga, aims at the speed and autonomy of the players, who will collect the ball directly from the flags, avoiding interaction with the catchers. -balls, which now have the task of replenishing only the flags without any direct interference in the game”.

The final four of the League Cup begins this Tuesday with the classic between Sporting and FC Porto and continues on Wednesday, with Benfica-Braga. The final will be played on Saturday. The three games will start at 7:45 pm.

This final phase of the tournament will also feature another unprecedented measure, through the “placement of removable goals for team warm-ups, designed particularly for goalkeeper exercises, also allowing for the reduction of wear and tear on the pitch before the start of the games”.

The League Cup, also the Allianz Cup, will also have a solidarity dimension. The sponsor that lends its name to the competition will donate, for each goal scored in the competition, two SIRESP radio telecommunications equipment to the firefighters of the Leiria district. The campaign has the motto “Mark to save”.

The recipients of this solidarity action are: Leiria Sapadores Firefighters, Leiria Volunteer Firefighters, Maceira Volunteer Firefighters, Ortigosa Volunteer Firefighters and Portuguese Red Cross – Leiria Delegation.
