CES 2025: Less salt is enough

Japan is fighting the excessive consumption of salt, which causes health problems, with a spoon.

At the stand of the Japanese company Kirin, we came across this interesting spoon, which can be said to be quite expensive with a price of around HUF 50,000. The purpose of the escaj, measured in gold prices, is to make food feel delicious enough with less salt – and thereby reduce the lurking danger to our health posed by excessive salt consumption.

The device named Electric Salt achieves the desired effect by having a small electrode in the actual spoon part, which receives a slight negative charge when the button on the handle is pressed, which attracts the otherwise spreading positive energy to itself (and thus close to our tongue) charged sodium ions. Since more of these ions remain on our tongue compared to usual, less salt can create the same sensation, it will not be necessary to oversalt the food, and we can even reduce the consumption so far.
