CES 2025: LG OLED G5 and M5 without MLA, but even brighter thanks to 4-stack OLED panel

Bye bye MLA layer, hello 4-stack OLED panel: LG promises the brightest images of all LG OLED TVs with the OLED G5 and M5 and this without the use of the additional MLA filter.

The G5-OLED once again comes onto the market in a straightforward gallery design and offers a robust metal frame. The interior, however, is very different from last year’s G4, because in addition to a more powerful processor, a new OLED panel is used.

Quite strange: An initial version of LG’s official press release contained information about the new 4-stack OLED panel, but the message disappeared shortly afterwards.

Even when asked, there was no comment on the 4-stack OLED panel during the presentation of the G5, but at least LG confirmed that the G5 will come onto the market without an MLA layer.

The even higher peak brightness compared to last year’s G4 (G5 is expected to achieve more than 2500 nits peak and 300 nits full screen) is achieved by the most powerful LG OLED of 2025 thanks to the Brightness Booster Ultimate – LG’s description for the new 4-stack OLED panel -Solution from LG Display.

The pixel structure is still based on a WRGB arrangement and white light subpixels achieve a higher peak brightness than the RGB subpixels. Nevertheless, LG promises a significant brightness advantage compared to previous LG OLED TVs, even with highly saturated colors. If the image brightness of the G5 is reduced to G4 level, the G5 works more energy-efficiently than last year’s model.

Thanks to the second generation Alpha 11 processor, the G5 is said to offer even better HDR tone mapping and more setting options in conjunction with HDR10 sources. The Filmmaker mode is intended to increase in brilliance primarily through the light sensor adjustment.

With the G5, an LG OLED television is the first to achieve up to 165 frames per second with the appropriate PC signals. LG’s XXL OLED televisions can therefore increasingly compete with professional monitors.

Screen diagonals from 48 to 97 inches cover most image size preferences; it remains to be seen whether all G5 OLED TV sizes will also come to Germany.

The only thing that has visibly shrunk on the G5 is the remote control, which is now based on other smart remotes (no number keys). However, the typical LG mouse pointer control via hand movements is still supported. The focus is increasingly on context-sensitive voice input, which is intended to simplify navigation thanks to AI.

As in previous years, a wireless display solution from the G series is also coming onto the market in the form of the new M5 models (equivalent 4-stack OLED image quality as G5).

Due to the wireless signal transmission, the M5 OLEDs set the transmission limit at 144 Hz. The M5 OLEDs will appear in 65 to 97 inches.
