CES 2025: Phison introduced a new generation of PCIe 5.0 SSD chips

Phison introduced a new high-end generation of PCIe 5.0 SSD platform, the controller is designated PS5029-E28. The new chip promises compatibility with next-generation 3D NAND.

In the past, Phison was the first company to offer an SSD controller with a PCIe 5.0 x4 interface. He was the sure and undisputed market leader for several years SSD. This week, the company strengthened its position in this area by introducing a new generation controller for the best high-end SSD drives – the PS5028-E28. It is a brand new eight-channel controller that can work with the upcoming 3D NAND types with a 4200 MT/s interface and supports SSDs with a whopping 32 TB capacity. In terms of performance, the chip promises a maximum sequential read and write performance of 14.5 GB/s. The maximum random read and write performance is 3 million IOPS.

Thanks to its compatibility with next-generation 3D NAND memory, this chip can support drives with capacities up to 32 TB, which is more than enough for client computers as well as workstations and even entry-level data centers.

Phison uses TSMC N6 process technology (6nm) to manufacture the new chip, the average power consumption of an E28-based SSD will be around 8.5 W. However, we currently do not know when drives based on this new chip will hit the market.
