Champions League: Wolfsburg has no chance – Lyon spoils Popp’s anniversary

The VfL Wolfsburg footballers suffered their second defeat in the preliminary round of the Champions League. The home game against Olympique Lyon ended 0:2 (0:1).

The French champions spoiled Alexandra Popp’s anniversary game. The 33-year-old played her 100th game in the premier class and its predecessor competitions.

Before Popp, only Lyon player Wendie Renard had reached this mark. Of all people, the 1.87 meter tall Frenchwoman scored with a header in the eighth minute of the game to make it 1-0 for the guests.

In the 53rd minute, Lindsay Horan converted a penalty kick caused by Janina Minge for last season’s finalists. Alexandra Popp limped off the pitch in stoppage time with an injured ankle.

Next game of the “Wolves” against Galatasaray

In the Group A table, the pointless “Wolves” are in third place behind AS Roma and Lyon. Only the top two teams reach the quarterfinals. VfL continues on November 13th with the game in Turkey against the Galatasaray Istanbul team, which is also still without a point.
