“Chance cards” bring 550 foreigners to Germany per month

From the introduction of the so-called “chance card” on June 1 until mid-October, Germany issued about 2,500 immigrant visas to foreigners interested in employment, or about 550 per month, the Ministry of the Interior announced.

The possibility of moving in for work is offered to people who do not meet all the conditions, said a spokesperson of the ministry.

Indian citizens received the most visas, 780. The Chinese, Turks and Pakistanis follow.

Requirements for applying are at least two years of education or training recognized in the home country, i.e. a high school diploma, as well as command of the German or English language.

Knowledge of the language, age, level of qualifications and possibly relatives legally residing in Germany bring candidates points. Anyone who collects enough points can apply for a visa, travel and look for employment in Germany.

Greens politician Misba Khan estimated that more people would have applied for the card if the process of issuing a visa was not so complicated. “Current data indicate that there is no place for panicky fear of too much immigration. “Excessive regulation is not part of a good migration policy,” she said.

This week, members of the Bundestag received a study on the feasibility of reforming the visa procedure, which proposes centralizing and simplifying the process.

Germany lacks hundreds of thousands of qualified workers every year, and the problem will intensify dramatically in the coming years with demographic changes. That’s why the state wants to reform the immigration policy and open the door wider to foreigners.
