“The specialized department allows us to provide medical care to seriously ill patients at a new quality level. Technologically complex rehabilitation in the intensive care unit is now actively used in adult medicine, and ReabIT at the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital brings this approach to pediatric practice. Here, patients who have retained their rehabilitation potential, despite on the severity of the condition and a long stay in intensive care,” Elena Petryaykina, director of the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital, told Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
The department was opened at the end of December, for which the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Mikhail Murashko came to the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital. The first patients of the department were six children with severe injuries received as a result of road accidents and emergencies, who spent a long time in intensive care at their place of residence, and then were taken to Moscow.
Here are just two short stories. Six-year-old Daniil from the Kursk region and seventeen-year-old Diana from Lugansk suffered in accidents: they received serious intracranial injuries and were admitted to the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital unconscious and with a loss of physical and psychological skills.
The team of doctors managed to help the children: they are now clearly conscious and can sit. In the near future they will be transferred to specialized departments for further treatment and recovery.
The ReabIT department combines in its work a multidisciplinary approach to each child and the “gold standard” of rehabilitation used in the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital to provide care to patients with the most severe diseases. Resuscitators and rehabilitation specialists work closely to select an individual recovery program for each patient, using different specialists.

“Directly in the intensive care unit, doctors and exercise therapy instructors, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, psychologists, neurologists work to restore physical activity and lost skills, conduct physiotherapeutic procedures and physical therapy, monitor the psychological and neurological status of the patient. Early initiation of rehabilitation plays a key role in the recovery process patients undergoing intensive care treatment for a long time. This approach helps prevent the development of severe complications of long-term intensive care. (PIT syndrome), restore the physiological and social status of the patient after suffering a critical condition,” explained Gleb Bryusov, head of the department of resuscitation, intensive care and rehabilitation of the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation.
The new department has six intensive care beds. That is, six children are being treated here at the same time. Modern equipment is designed for all stages of rehabilitation: from procedures at the bedside of a bedridden patient to his verticalization and subsequent mobilization. The department uses the most modern technology – devices and simulators for developing joints, stimulating neuromuscular conduction, procedures for local hypothermia of the brain, micropolarization.

An important detail: the department operates on the principle of open intensive care – parents can always come to a sick child. They even have a special room for them where they can relax and have a snack.
“Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital always strives to be at the forefront of medical science and technology. The opening of the intensive care and rehabilitation department is not just a new stage in the development of the hospital, but also an important step for the entire healthcare system of our country. We are confident that this project will become a methodological basis for other medical institutions and will help children quickly return to an active life after serious illnesses or injuries,” noted Elena Petryaykina.
The department is part of the Center for Medical Rehabilitation of the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital, where more than 10 thousand children undergo rehabilitation annually.
Direct speech
Mikhail Murashko, Minister of Health of Russia:
“The new department provides medical care to patients who need both rehabilitation and resuscitation measures. This is the most severe category of patients who are most often admitted to intensive care in serious condition – after road traffic accidents, explosion injuries, after severe somatic infectious diseases.
Today, rehabilitation, of course, is used already on the first day in intensive care units. But the peculiarity of this department lies precisely in the fact that the layout, equipment, and solutions that have been developed here are unique and allow specialists from different fields to work with the child throughout almost the whole day, thereby returning the opportunity for him to recover.
It is important that treatment is available under the compulsory medical insurance policy to children from all regions of the country.”
