Chaos after Olympic final: disqualification withdrawn

Chaotic scenes during and after the women’s 5000 meter final at the Paris Olympic Games: Second-placed Kenyan Faith Kipyegon was initially disqualified after a scuffle, but a protest was ultimately upheld. In return, Italian Nadia Battocletti had to hand over her medal.

Athlete Faith Kipyegon won the silver medal in the 5000 m at the Olympic Games behind her compatriot Beatrice Chebet. Officials in Paris confirmed this hours after the final on Monday evening.

Because: Kipyegon was initially disqualified, her second place went to gold favorite Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands. Bronze sensationally went to Nadia Battocletti from Italy – who is now only in fourth place in the final ranking. Hassan has to make do with bronze.

What had happened? Two laps before the finish, there was a scuffle between Faith Kipyegon and the Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay. The trigger, however, was the world record holder Tsegay, who wanted to overtake Kipyegon and pulled in too early. The Kenyan did not let this go and extended her arm. Both stumbled briefly before the final laps in the Stade de France began.

Kipyegon learned of disqualification during TV interview

The competition judges classified the incident as “obstruction” but initially penalized Kipyegon for it. She only found out about her disqualification minutes after the race, when she celebrated her double victory with fellow countrywoman Chebet in a “Eurosport” interview. In disbelief, she looked at a monitor on which the provisional result showed her disqualification in black and white. It was only hours later that the disqualification was revoked.

The race had been announced in advance as a battle between the three fastest women in history over 5000 m. In the three-way battle between defending champion Hassan, reigning world champion Kipyegon and world record holder Tsegay, Beatrice Chebet ultimately prevailed in 14:28.56 minutes.
