ChatGPT launched a search feature on Thursday, intensifying competition with Alphabet’s Google, the dominant company in the sector. The announcement was made on the Open IA website, the company that owns the artificial intelligence chatbot. “You can get quick, timely responses with links to relevant sources on the web that you needed before turning to a search engine,” the statement said. After being made available on some premium services, it will be available to the general public in the coming months.
The functionality allows you to obtain updated data on stock prices, sports results, weather, news and other information, the company exemplifies, by searching directly on ChatGPT“in a more natural and intuitive way”. After obtaining the answers to the requested data, follow-up questions can be asked to the chatbot, “just like in a conversation”, guarantees OpenIA.
Bing, a Microsoft search engine that already uses OpenIA technology, will be one of the tools used for research. The feature is based on Open AI’s latest AI model, GPT-4o, and uses partnerships with data providers and several global media groups, including Associated Press, Axel Springer, Condé Nast, Financial Times, Hearst, Le Monde, News Corp, Prisa (owner of El País), Reuters, The Atlantic, and Time, among other organizations.
The search will be done automatically by ChatGPT based on the questions, but users will also be able to search directly on the internet through an option within the chatbot. Sources of information will also be available through links to articles or other content.
Despite still being highly loss-making, expecting to post losses this year of more than $5 billion, according to CNBC, OpenIA continues to manage to raise funds in multiple rounds of financing and lines of credit, currently valued at 157 billion dollars.
