OpenAI is breathing new life into its robotics department. That seemed to be the case for a while, but now a senior member of the company has also indicated it. And she shares more details about what OpenAI plans to do with robots.
Hardware Director Caitlin Kalinowski writes X that OpenAI wants to make its own robots, including its own line of sensors. She posted new job openings for the robotics department, stating that the new OpenAI team is working on general-purpose robots that are highly adaptable and versatile. They must be robots that have human-like intelligence and are used in the real world.
Robot by OpenAI
It seems to be more about robotics for the home than robotics for businesses. Naturally, a lot of artificial intelligence is applied: after all, AI is the core of OpenAI. And judging by the competition, it is also the basis of many humanoid robots. Tesla, Xiaomi and more brands are working on their own humanoid robots, or are investing heavily in companies that build these types of robots. Whether OpenAI is also going for a human-looking robot has not yet been confirmed by OpenAI, but it is rumored that it is this type of robot.
In the vacancy text states: “We work across the entire model stack, integrating advanced hardware and software to explore a wide range of robot form factors. We aim to seamlessly blend high-level AI capabilities with the physical limitations of physical robotic platforms.” It also appears that OpenAI plans to start mass production with it. This is separate from the gadget that OpenAI would create together with former Apple designer Jony Ive.
