ChatGPT: Memory function also in Europe and for free users

OpenAI is expanding the rollout of the memory feature, which lets ChatGPT save information shared during the chat history and retrieve it later. Now you can access it too.

UPDATE

Good news for all ChatGPT users: After initial tests in 2023 and a roll-out for paying users in early 2024, users of the free version of the AI tool can now also access the memory feature. And this is finally available in Europe. You too can now use it to make your conversations more goal-oriented and dynamic in the long term. A pop-up informs users in the app and in the web version.

After initial indications of a reminder function in summer 2023, OpenAI began testing the memory feature with the first users of the free and Plus versions a few months ago. Now the function with which ChatGPT can remember information has been activated for all Plus users. OpenAI announced this on X. However, the feature is not yet available in Europe, possibly due to data protection concerns.

ChatGPT can use the memory function to remember all information that could be relevant for the rest of the conversation. The feature is designed to make conversations more fluid and also save time.

Temporary chats are still possible

Users can activate the memory function in the personalization settings – and turn it off again if necessary. All reminders saved by ChatGPT can be viewed in the settings; individual reminders can be deleted without deactivating the entire function. It is also possible to start a temporary chat. During this time, no information is saved for the reminder function.

Once the feature is activated, ChatGPT remembers the information shared in the chat (such as location, occupation, or conversation style preferences) even without a specific request. It is also possible to ask ChatGPT to recall certain information from the memory (such as details about an ongoing project).

Custom Instructions allow additional personalization

At first glance, the memory function is reminiscent of the custom instructions, which are now also available to users of the free version. These allow users to give the chatbot individual instructions that are taken into account in every conversation. The memory function differs from the custom instructions in that it stores information that is shared directly during the chat rather than explicitly as an instruction. OpenAI explained:

Custom Instructions continue to allow you to provide ChatGPT with direct guidance on what you’d like it to know about you and how you’d like it to respond. For explicit information or instructions, you can add it to your Custom Instructions. For information shared via conversations, ChatGPT can remember relevant details for you.

According to OpenAI, the reminder feature will soon be activated for the team and enterprise versions as well as for GPTs (customized ChatGPT versions, the creation of which OpenAI has enabled since November 2023). The developers of the GPTs can activate the memory function when creating them. Each GPT receives its own reminder function that exists independently of ChatGPT – so users may have to share preferences multiple times.
