The president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) still hopes to persuade world number one Magnus Carlsen to take part in the Blitz World Championship, which begins on Monday.
According to VG, chess president Arkady Dvorkovich tells the Spanish newspaper El Pais that he is very interested in finding a solution to the pending dispute between the federation and the Norwegian.
The disagreements culminated in Carlsen leaving the Rapid Chess World Cup prematurely on the night of Saturday Danish time.
The Fide president is suffering from flu and was therefore not present when Carlsen was first fined and then disqualified for appearing in jeans – an outfit that is not allowed according to the World Cup rules.
The Norwegian refused to change his pants and later declined to appeal the ban. He stated instead that he intends to stay away from the Blitz Chess Championship.
Now the president will try to smooth things over.
“This is something that would not have happened if I had been present, as during the last championships. We have had similar problems before and we have managed to solve them”, says Arkady Dvorkovich, according to NTB, to the chess app Take Take Take.
There is speculation in the Norwegian media that Carlsen’s rebellion against the chess dress code is an offshoot of a long-term conflict between the Norwegian megastar and the international federation.
The dispute has flared up after Carlsen, together with a German businessman, has established tournaments outside Fide auspices.
Carlsen claims that the federation has threatened players with exclusion from the WC if they compete in the competitive events.
In the Norwegian’s absence, the Russian Volodar Murzin became the new world rapid chess champion. The Blitz World Championship begins on Monday.
