First public trial held for 30-year-old American lecturer
“Give me time to come to an agreement with the victim”
It was discovered that Mr. A (30s), an American instructor who was brought to trial on charges of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl at a language school in Busan, committed the crime while conducting a class while intoxicated on the day of the incident.
On the 16th, Busan District Court Criminal Division 7 (Presiding Judge Shin Heon-gi) held the first trial for American citizen A (30s), who was indicted on charges of violating the Special Act on the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes (forcible molestation of a minor under the age of 13) and the Immigration Control Act.
According to the prosecution’s indictment, Mr. A was indicted on charges of repeatedly forcibly molesting a 5-year-old girl while intoxicated and teaching at a language school in Busan on May 22.
Person A is also accused of entering the country on a three-month tourist visa, not an E-2 visa, and working there.
In response to the court’s question of “Was there anything wrong with the investigation process?”, Mr. A claimed, “When I looked at the translated indictment, it said that I drank 7 bottles of soju before class, but that’s not true. I drank a total of 7 bottles that day.”
Mr. A’s side said, “We admit to all the charges and are reflecting on them,” and asked the court, “We will receive support from Mr. A’s family in the U.S. and reach an agreement with the victim. Please give us time to reach an agreement with the victim.”
The victim’s attorney, who appeared in court that day, announced that he had submitted a petition demanding severe punishment for Mr. A.
The court set the next trial date for Mr. A as August 20th.
