The Chinese open source operating system Kylin, based on the Unix kernel, has just introduced a new version of the system integrated with AI technologies. This update includes support for LLM, an AI assistant that answers questions and can generate images from text. So when we squint a lot, we’re looking at a truncated Chat GPT or Copilot AI. All these functions are directly integrated into the system and the assistant can be simply called up from the menu. Long story short, the system really works pretty much the same as Windows s Copilotem.
China’s state-run Science and Technology Daily called the improved Kylin a “safe, stable and controllable system”. The operating system, which strongly resembles Microsoft Windows, is developed exclusively in China and involves 3,876 developers from 271 companies. The effort is part of China’s broader effort to reduce its dependence on foreign technology.
Despite these efforts, Kylin still has some catching up to do, as Windows remains the dominant operating system in China with nearly 80% market share, as of June 2024. However, it is quite remarkable how quickly China is able to create its own version of something that foreign companies have been working for several years.
