In 2023, China became the world’s largest exporter of vehicles for the first time, and in the first half of 2024 it widened its gap, leaving Japan in second place.
Specifically, in the first six months of this year, Japan’s vehicle exports fell 0.3 percent year-on-year to below 2.02 million, according to data released this week by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. The figure includes 1.83 million passenger vehicles and about 187,000 commercial vehicles.
By contrast, automakers in China shipped more than 2.79 million vehicles overseas in the same period, a 31 percent jump from last year, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Exports include about 2.34 million passenger vehicles and about 454,000 commercial vehicles.
Among China’s vehicle exports in the first half, vehicles powered by internal combustion engines rose 36 percent to nearly 2.19 million. Exports of electric vehicles also rose 13% to about 605,000.
For the first six months, the top five vehicle exporters among Chinese automakers are Chery Automobile, SAIC Motor, Changan Automobile., Geely Automobile and BYD. Chery exported about 532,000 vehicles, SAIC about 439,000 vehicles, Changan about 285,000 vehicles, Geely about 242,000 vehicles, and BYD about 207,000 vehicles.
Chinese brands captured 11% of the European electric car market in June, but Chinese vehicle imports now face tough European Union tariffs that came into effect in July.
