Chinese woman with two uteruses gives birth to two babies

Reading time: 2 minutes – Spotted on CNN

It is an extremely rare birth that recently captivated Chinese Internet users: Madame Li, suffering from a malformation, gave birth to twins, each from a different uterus. An anomaly called uterine didelphia, as indicated on the website of the American channel CNN.

The young mother gave birth to a boy and a girl by cesarean section, health authorities and Chinese state media reported. Xi’an People’s Hospital in Shaanxi Province (northwest China) says such cases occur once “out of a million”.

According to the facility, the new mother was not only born with two uteruses, but also two cervixes. This condition is observed in approximately one in 2,000 women. A didelphus uterus is not necessarily characterized by symptoms in the patient. So, it can go unnoticed for a long time. As for the vagina, it can be normal or “double”.

“Close and strict” medical monitoring

“It is extremely rare for twins to be conceived naturally in each cavity of the uterus, and even rarer for them to be carried to term.”highlighted the hospital on the Chinese social network Weibo on September 18. The story became a viral topic among internet users in the country, with the post having been viewed more than 50 million times in just a few days. Many users took the opportunity to send messages of admiration.

If Internet users cried out for a miracle, others expressed their concern for the mother. However, it is a happy outcome for the latter who, faced with such circumstances, had suffered a miscarriage during a previous pregnancy, as revealed by the Xi’an People’s Hospital.

Having become pregnant in January, this Chinese woman then discovered during an early ultrasound that she was expecting twins – one in each uterus. After medical follow-up “narrow and strict”she gave birth “successfully” of a boy and a girl both weighing 2.5 kilograms.
