Olomouc – Chlorine leaked in the swimming pool area in Olomouc early this evening. Paramedics treated six people, five of whom were taken to hospital. Břetislav Bolard, spokesman for the Olomouc Region Medical Rescue Service, told ČTK. Firefighters are still working in the pool area and ventilating the interior spaces. The circumstances of the accident are being investigated by the police.
“Six people with slight irritation of the upper respiratory tract and eyes were treated. Five of them were taken to the hospital,” said Bolard. The evacuation of people from the pool area near the center of Olomouc began before the arrival of the fire brigade. “We are currently checking the (chlorine) concentrations on site and ventilating the building,” said fire brigade spokesman Josef Koláček, according to whom the chlorine escaped in the sauna.
Chlorine gas is a poisonous gas with a pungent odor that irritates the eyes and respiratory organs, causes a spasmodic and irritating cough. Higher concentrations can cause swelling of the lungs. Symptoms may appear several tens of hours after inhalation.
