Ciolacu wants “a gentleman” for the position of European Commissioner

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, president of the PSD, declared on Wednesday that he will propose a man for the position of European Commissioner that returns to Romania in the new composition of the European Commission.

“After two proposed ladies, I think we will propose a man. I repeat, twice Romania came up with two commissioner proposals, ladies. I think that this time, Romania can make a gentleman’s proposal”, declared Marcel Ciolacu, being asked if for the position of European Commissioner that will return to Romania he will have two proposals, for equal opportunities, respectively “a woman and a man “.

Also, the head of the Government was asked about the negotiations conducted by the Romanian side for the post of European Commissioner.

“Just like in the case of the Commission and the leadership of the Commission, just like in the case of the European Parliament, you saw that the PSD is represented and Romania is represented by a vice-president, in the Parliament (European ed.). These functions, by custom, are divided according to the political families. Romania will have a representative in the Commission as a commissioner. First, the commissioner positions are divided within the political families. Truly, we have submitted to the European political family of which I belong, from the S&D, the social democrats, the fact that we want the commissioner for the economy, the current commissioner for the economy being Mr. Gentiloni from Italy. We will see how the negotiations go. But you also know that we, Romania, are different from the others. I will nominate the commissioner, and Mr. President Iohannis, according to a decision of the CCR that I am not commenting on, but we are implementing, is negotiating within the European Council”, replied Ciolacu.

At the same time, the prime minister stated that he had discussions with other counterparts on this subject.

“I tried to have direct contact with as many prime ministers as possible, primarily social democrats from Europe, and I also had discussions with Chancellor Scholz, and Antonio Costa, and Pedro Sanchez, and Mette from Denmark and we are trying to… There are some negotiations that we are conducting during this period”, declared Ciolacu.

In the same context, he was also asked about the chances that Ursula von der Leyen has of obtaining a new mandate at the head of the European Commission.

“I know, for a fact, that there is a political agreement between the big political families, between S&D, EPP and Renew, and tomorrow there is a vote to continue a new mandate for Mrs. Ursula, as President of the Commission, following Antonio Costa from S&D to take over the European Council and I saw that Mrs. Metsola has already been voted for two and a half years at the head of the European Parliament. Let’s… There are always discussions about whether the votes arrive or not. The same discussions took place five years ago and the votes arrived. I am firmly convinced that this time too the three European families will secure the necessary votes for Mrs. President Ursula to take a new mandate and to respect the agreement concluded between the European families”, said Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu.
