The city of Hamburg is taking a rather unusual step by acquiring 49.9 percent of the shares in the telecommunications provider willy.tel for almost 89 million euros. This is intended to accelerate the expansion of the fiber optic network in the Hanseatic city.
Finance Senator Andreas Dressel (SPD) told dpa that the goal is to have more than 100,000 additional connections by 2034. In Hamburg, 68 percent of households are currently capable of connection and 50 percent are actually connected. Schools and the administration are already fully equipped with fiber optics.
willy.tel is active in 80 of the 104 districts. The company was founded in 1990 under the name Thiele Kommunikationstechnik GmbH and received its current name in 2008 as part of the Thiele Group. According to its own information, it supplies more than 150,000 households via its own independent fiber optic network. It is also the preferred supplier for the housing industry. This includes 21 Hamburg building cooperatives and more than 600 property management companies.
