Cologne lies between Bonn and Düsseldorf – and therefore between the headquarters of Telekom and Vodafone. It’s no surprise that these two providers face tough competition in the area of Germany’s fourth largest city. But Telefónica is also getting involved – and is ahead of Vodafone this year. Does the traditionally tense relationship between the cities of Düsseldorf and Cologne play a role? In all of this, one should not lose sight of the fact that the network operators achieve their rankings at the highest level: the grade “outstanding” three times speaks for itself.
All three are equally strong in the voice discipline, Telekom stands out in data and crowd
The top performances in the discipline of voice telephony are remarkable. All three providers received full marks in both the drive tests and the walk tests. This means that Telefónica in particular has caught up significantly compared to the previous year. In the data ranking, the people of Bonn are confidently leading, second place goes to Telefónica/O2 with a lead of 10 points. In both the walk tests and the drive tests, the competitor from Munich shows slightly higher performance than the Düsseldorf company, i.e. Vodafone – but only by a minimal margin in the walk tests.
The observations from the drive and walk tests are then also confirmed in the crowdsourcing for the cathedral city: Telekom is in the lead, and in second place Telefónica is just one point ahead of Vodafone.
This time a balanced picture for broadband coverage
The map display of the “quality of broadband coverage” per evaluation area reflects these results – it shows a relatively balanced distribution between the three network operators. For each 2×2 km tile, it is visualized which provider has the highest percentage of customers with 4G/5G coverage. Here too, please note: The visualization only refers to this one KPI and not to the overall result in Cologne.
Nevertheless, local strongholds can certainly be derived from this evaluation. Accordingly, the city center is highly contested. Telekom has a special presence in Rodenkirchen as well as in parts of Chorweiler and Ehrenfeld. Vodafone is strong in Kalk and Mühlheim as well as in parts of Chorweiler, Porz and Lindenthal. Telefónica is located in parts of Ehrenfeld, Mühlheim, Porz, Rodenkirchen and Nippes.
