With over 1.9 million inhabitants Hamburg the second largest German city after Berlin. The target group of German network operators there is correspondingly large. According to our individual evaluation, Deutsche Telekom is meeting this challenge most consistently. It leads in the Hanseatic city by a clear margin, while Vodafone and Telefónica are equally strong in the overall ranking this year. However, all three network operators achieved the grade “outstanding”.
All three providers are close together when it comes to voice, Telekom leads in the data discipline
In the language ranking, only one point separates Telekom from Telefónica, with Vodafone following two points behind. What is particularly pleasing here is that all three providers achieved the highest score in the language discipline in the walk tests. In the drive tests, however, Telekom leads, Telefónica follows very closely behind, while the gap to Vodafone is slightly larger. Telekom clearly demonstrated its test victory in the Hanseatic city in the data discipline. Here, the Bonn-based company leads by a clear margin over its competitors, who perform equally well in the category rankings.
The test results in the walk tests are quite close – Hamburg residents and their visitors can rely on stable internet connections when walking. The performance differences become clearer in the drive tests. Here, Telekom maintains its high performance level from the walk tests, while Telefónica and Vodafone fall slightly behind and are on par in the points ranking. Telekom once again comes out on top in crowdsourcing. In this discipline, Vodafone follows in second place and Telefónica just behind.
Different champions for broadband coverage per neighborhood
The map visualizes the test point “Quality of broadband coverage” and thus the leader in terms of the percentage of customers with 4G or 5G reception for each “Evaluation Area” (2×2 km tile). This allows good conclusions to be drawn about the availability of mobile broadband connections – however, this representation does not show the overall result, as many other KPIs are included in the latter.
In Hamburg, this analysis shows that Telekom has strengths in Eimsbüttel and parts of Altona, Mitte, Harburg and Bergedorf. Vodafone is champion in Altona-Nord, the south of Harburg and in parts of Bergedorf and Eimsbüttel. We see Telefónica strongholds in Waltershof, Altenwerder, Steinwerder, northern Harburg as well as in parts of Mitte and Wandsbek.
