Civil Protection of the Generalitat has activated the special emergency plan for the risk of floods in Catalonia (INUNCAT) on alert, following the warning from the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (SMC) that intense rain is expected from this afternoon in several regions. Intense precipitation is expected on the coast and pre-coastal areas of Barcelona and Tarragona, and with less intensity in the northern counties of Girona.
For tomorrow there is a probability that in the regions of Terres de l’Ebre and Tarragona, specifically in Baix Camp, Baix Ebre, Ribera d’Ebre, Montsià and Tarragonès, the rain intensity threshold of 40 liters may be exceeded square meter in 30 minutes. The precipitation will be accompanied locally by a storm. The geographical distribution of the phenomenon within the warned area will be local in nature.
The PROCICAT Plan is also on pre-alert due to the strong swell expected all along the coast, especially in the regions of Alt and Baix Empordà. Forecasts indicate that the waves may exceed 2.5 meters (surge).
Civil Protection reminds that it is necessary to take extreme precautions in mobility and outdoor activities, and not to cross streams, ravines, torrents or any flooded area in general wherever it is raining or where there is already an accumulation of water. It is also necessary to stay away from the coast and places where the waves break strongly. Stay away from breakwaters, breakwaters, boardwalks and other areas where waves break nearby.
When there is heavy rainfall when you are at home, it is not safe to go down into flooded areas such as the basement or garage. It is also not recommended to leave objects or furniture outside that the water can drag away.
If you are surprised by heavy rainfall outside in a built-up area, seek shelter inside a safe building and close doors and windows. In the mountains, aim for elevated spots that are far from riverbanks and ravines, rambles or torrents.
When traveling by vehicle, do so preferably on the main routes and motorways. Moderate your speed and keep safe distances. If you have visibility problems, stop the vehicle and signal your position.
On the coast, floods can occur due to the bad state of the sea and large waves that can affect the coast with violence. Even if there are no signs of danger, be careful: the sea storm can cause you to be swept away by a rough sea.
Use extreme caution in recreational or professional activities at sea: these should be avoided in case of large waves. Do not access areas of the coast affected by strong swells or places where the waves break strongly.
Respect the access closures to these points, they are there for your safety. Don’t stop to watch the waves, avoid putting yourself in danger.
