Clermont-Ferrand chosen by Michelin and Danone for a new biotechnology hub

Danone, Michelin, DMC Biotechnologies and Crédit Agricole have launched Biotech Open Platform, in Clermont-Ferrand (Puy-de-Dôme). It is a platform for cutting-edge biotechnologies. “There are less than five in the world, this will be the third in Europe”rejoices Pierre Robert, director of the city’s Center for Sustainable Materials.

16 million euros investment

The site is due to open in 2025, after an investment of 16 million euros. The program includes a purification line and two 10 cubic meter fermenters. With this equipment, advanced fermentation processes will be developed on a large scale. They will be intended to produce the biosourced materials and ingredients of the future, an alternative to fossil resources. These biotechnologies are experiencing a global boom. They use microorganisms (bacteria, yeasts or fungi) to produce proteins, enzymes and other molecules that can be used in industry.
