Cold, Flu, or COVID-19? An Expert Helps You See Things Clearly as Fall Approaches

The problem with colds, flu and Covid-19 is that their symptoms are similar. Runny nose, chills, fatigue, headaches, cough… In this autumn period conducive to the circulation of viruses, how can we tell the difference between these three illnesses?

Dr. William Brian Glenn of Hackensack Meridian Medical Group in the United States explained: at Medical Xpress Everything you need to know to be prepared for any respiratory virus that arises in the coming months.

We list ALL the symptoms

A cold can include coughing, sneezing, runny nose, sore throat and fatigue, while the flu can include all of these symptoms PLUS… headache, fever, chills, body aches and fatigue.

On the other hand, Covid can present with cold and flu symptoms, as well as loss of taste or smell, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting or shortness of breath, says William Brian Glenn.

Flu comes on more suddenly than a cold

Another difference to know: Cold symptoms tend to appear graduallywhile flu symptoms appear suddenly.

Symptoms of Covid develop between two and 14 days after exposure to the virus, and can progress to more serious forms in some people.

Older adults, as well as children and adults with chronic diseases, metabolic disorders, heart disease or cancer, are more susceptible to respiratory infections. Taking certain medications that weaken the immune system can also increase the risk of contracting these diseases, the doctor says.

We are resuming barrier gestures

To protect yourself, wash your hands several times a day, cover your mouth when you cough, sneeze into your elbow, wear a mask when necessary, regularly clean frequently touched surfaces such as countertops, doorknobs, and toilet handles. Finally, remember to hydrate yourself and rest when you need it.
