The Indianapolis Colts lost 20-23 to the Houston Texans in Week 8. Starting quarterback Anthony Richardson disappointed again and therefore probably has to worry about his job in the NFL.
On Monday, Colts coach Shane Steichen was asked whether Richardson would continue to be his team’s starter. “Today it is him,” replied the 39-year-old. When the reporters then pressed for a more meaningful answer regarding the upcoming duel with the Minnesota Vikings, the trainer evaded again and said that they were “currently checking everything.”
Steichen’s reluctance is understandable. Richardson showed another dismal performance against the Texans when he only completed 10 (!) of his 32 passes for 175 yards. The fact that the signal caller also threw the next interception, which the opponents converted into points, is almost just a side note.
The fact that Richardson took himself out for a play in the third quarter because, according to his own statement, he felt “tired” could weigh much more heavily for Steichen.
“We talked about it this morning in the quarterback room, I will keep it confidential. But of course he knows that you can’t take yourself out of such situations,” reported the HC, criticizing his playmaker’s behavior.
NFL colleague defends Richardson
By the way, Colts center Ryan Kelly didn’t spare any critical words on Monday when he spoke to the journalists present about Richardson’s solo effort.
“I think he knows that this is not the level that he has to reach and that the rest of the team demands of him,” said the veteran, who therefore considers the reaction to the misconduct to be appropriate. “I’m sure he’ll have to take criticism for that and rightly so, right?”
At the same time, he warned against questioning Richardson’s attitude as an NFL professional. “If you watch his film, you’ll see that at times we didn’t move the ball effectively, but he gives everything for his teammates. He’s young. I’m sure it’s a learning moment for him and I’ll leave it at that “Kelly concluded this topic.
