COMMENTARY Lelia Munteanu: Hanukkah skit

Tonight is Hanukkah Eve. Also called the Festival of Lights, it is a celebration of the joy of being in the middle of the family, a “Children’s Christmas”, who receive gifts, eat doughnuts, sing and play. It lasts for eight days and, every day, a candle is lit in the candlestick with nine arms – from left to right.
The children (but not only them) spin the dreidel (the Yiddish name for the puppeteer).
A letter is drawn on each of the four sides of the puppet: Nun, Gimel, Hei, Shin. Nun from nisht, meaning nothing. Gimel from gantz, meaning everything. Hey from the pint, that is half. And shin from shtel, meaning pay. It can be played in two or any number, in the eight evenings when a candle is added to the candlestick.
… I spin the puppet too, between everything and nothing.
