Community, AI and hype: YouTube’s Creator Update at a glance

Dream Screen now with more AI power

Last year, YouTube introduced the Dream Screen feature for Shorts, which allows creators to create AI-based video or image backgrounds based on text prompts. Now the feature is getting an upgrade: YouTube is integrating Veo, a model from Google DeepMind, which can be used to create high-quality videos in 1080p resolution from simple text descriptions, into Shorts. This makes previously unimaginable content ideas possible, such as YouTube describes:

You’ll be able to create even more incredible video backgrounds, breathing life into concepts that were once impossible to visualize. Imagine a BookTuber stepping into the pages of the classic novel, The Secret Garden, or a fashion designer instantly visualizing fun and imaginative design concepts to share with their audience.

Creators can also create standalone clips up to six seconds long, which can be used to fill gaps in the video material, for example. These are marked with a label to show users that the clips were created with AI. The function is reminiscent of a feature of Adobe’s new Firefly video model, which the company recently introduced.

Another AI-supported update concerns the Inspiration tab in YouTube Studio. This is getting a makeover and will enable creators to receive content recommendations based on artificial intelligence that will generate ideas – for example for video topics, titles or thumbnails.

Community Hub and Hyping instead of Liking

The Communities feature is intended to strengthen the sense of community between creators and fans, but also between fans. The new channel hub offers space for discussing videos, sharing fan art and communication between viewers. However, the function is not yet fully activated; the broader rollout will follow in early 2025.

The new hype function is intended to particularly benefit up-and-coming creators. Viewers can hype the videos of their favorite content creators to express their support. The videos with the most hype points are presented on a so-called leaderboard; this is intended to increase the visibility of the content. This function is also not yet available to all users.

AI is used on the platform not only in the content creation process, but also directly in the YouTube feed, most recently in the form of AI-generated summaries. It is questionable to what extent creators actually benefit from this – after all, the summaries may already be enough for some viewers.
