A similar incident occurred on December 16, 2023. Again the accident was avoided thanks to the timely intervention of the train driver who stopped the train.
Train drivers report that there were technical problems at a point where the remote control and light signals are fully operational, as the station coverage indicator was wrongly green, instead of red.
Regarding the recent incident, the train drivers emphasize:

“On Monday 25/11/2024, train 2591 was stopped due to a technical problem at the Korinos stop. It was followed by train IC 57. According to the reports of the 2 train drivers of IC 57 while train 2591 was parked at S.S. Corino the entry indicator on it was green, instead of red. The drivers of IC 57 had reduced their speed, knowing that the leading Amax 2591 was 15 minutes late and experiencing technical problems and thus the collision was avoided.”
However, they emphasize that “this incident is not the first in the area of S.S. Korinos but the 2nd in the last year as according to another driver’s report, which has been submitted to Hellenic Train, on 16.12.2023 running train 11595 he was informed by Plateos station – by phone due to poor communication quality – that train IC 53 has stopped within the S.S. Korinou due to a technical problem but the station coverage indicator was wrongly green, instead of red! The train driver then immediately parked the train awaiting further orders from the Remote Controller”.

Almost another train collision at Korinos station, in Pieria
As the “Rizospastis” newspaper and 902.gr revealed today, a train collision at the Korinos station in Pieria was avoided at the last minute.
The extremely serious incident took place the day before yesterday, Monday (25/11), when the Intercity 57 train with about 200 passengers almost ran into a train of the commuter train traveling the Thessaloniki-Larissa route.
The suburban train that was on the descent line suffered a breakdown at approximately 5 pm last Monday, as a result of which it stopped at Korinos station.
At the same time, according to the report, the Intercity 57 train running the Thessaloniki-Athens route was on the descent line without the driver having been informed of the fact that the suburban train was stopped on its way.
Information states that the Intercity train drivers realized the risk of another accident only when they heard their colleague on the radio informing them that he remained at Korinos station immobilized.
The train driver of Intercity 57 contacted the train driver of the commuter train via cell phone to confirm the breakdown and if they were indeed stalled on their way down.
Immediately after being informed, the driver of Intercity 57 was able to stop the train before the worst happened.
Vassilis Oikonomou: “OSE is investigating the event”
In the revealing publication, the Deputy Minister of Transport, Vassilis Economou, was mentioned. Speaking on the program “Morning Greece”, on ANT1, he claimed that the OSE is investigating the incident and that all measures have been taken. “There have been moves technically. Since Monday afternoon, several tests have been carried out. The beacon is now responding. The remote control and the photo-signaling also work”, emphasized Mr. Housekeeper.
The deputy minister emphasized that once a report has been made by the train driver, the matter will be investigated. “All dialogues will be investigated,” he added.
