Conifer nursery, without government intervention

Aleksandar Glogovac from Bogatić started his family business in 2001, and today his conifer nursery covers almost five hectares and has over 150 thousand pots. With the support of his wife Biljana and sister Marija, Aleksandar created a successful nursery, which stands out for its quality and innovation. At the beginning, they learned from experienced experts and applied that knowledge in practice, developing a specific branch of agriculture in their area, where the majority of the population is dedicated to livestock, farming or vegetable growing.

The Glogovac family decided to devote themselves to the cultivation of conifers, even though it is an expensive business, without the help of state subsidies aimed at other branches of agriculture. They finance all their investments themselves, and the biggest advantage of their nursery is the watering system they introduced on all plots. This system is crucial for pot production because pots have limited space, they dry out faster and it is necessary to constantly provide moisture. Although the watering system saved many plants during the year with high temperatures, damage was still inevitable.

Nursery maintenance costs are high. Biljana Glogovac points out that the costs for land, fertilizer, mechanization, transport and procurement of pots are huge. Plants are sold throughout Serbia, and Glogovci are also present on the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their customers are most often florists, landscaping companies, but also public institutions through tenders. They regularly participate in fairs in Valjevo, Koceljeva and Šabac, which contributes to the expansion of their customer network.

This is how a successful nursery is built

The nursery of the Glogovac family offers over 70 different types of conifers and decorative forms. Among them, emeralds and leylands are the most sought after for hedges. The prices of the plants vary, with the cheapest potted plants costing around 350 dinars, while the most expensive Magnolia Grandiflora reaches a price of over 40 thousand dinars. For larger orders, the family organizes the transport themselves, while they advise picking up smaller plants in person.

The pandemic has brought an unexpected increase in the demand for plants, as citizens began to landscape their yards en masse, which further increased the workload at the nursery. The Glogovac family did not worry about competition, because they believe that every nursery has its own uniqueness. They are planning further expansion of the nursery, but they are facing the problem of labor shortage, because this business requires work throughout the year, which makes it difficult to find workers.

The nursery Glogovac, located at the entrance to Bogatić, offers not only quality plants but also advice on arranging gardens and yards. Because of this practice, the nursery has become popular both among the local population and among customers from other parts of the country.
