Consideration of euthanasia when adoption fails… The fate of ‘Gwanggyo deer’

Caught attacking citizens with horns in parks and walking trails
If the owner does not show up, consider euthanasia after protection for a certain period of time.

A deer that appeared in a city park and walking trail, injured two citizens with its antlers, and was then captured four days after its appearance and could not find its owner, so the local government in charge is going through a public adoption process. If the adoption is not successful, there is a possibility that the deer will be euthanized.

According to Suwon City, Gyeonggi Province, on the 25th, the missing animal search notice for a deer captured using a tranquilizer gun near a restaurant in Hagwanggyo-dong, Jangan-gu on the 9th of this month expires on this day. Previously, on the 6th, this deer attacked and injured two citizens with its horns at Gwanggyo Lake Park in Yeongtong-gu and Gwanggyo Reservoir in Jangan-gu.

Wild deer are extinct in Korea, and if the owner of this deer, which has been confirmed to be a male exotic deer about 8 years old, does not appear by this day, Suwon City will take ownership. In this case, Suwon City plans to immediately begin an open adoption process through the National Animal Protection Information System.

In Suwon City, missing and rescued animals are moved to the Suwon City Animal Protection Center. Afterwards, the owner is searched for 10 days through a missing animal search notice. If the owner does not show up, the animal is kept for a certain period of time and then reviewed for euthanasia. Suwon City Animal Protection Center operates with a protection period of usually one year after announcing the search for missing animals.

An official at the Animal Protection Center said, “Like other animals, we plan to protect the deer for about a year and proceed with the adoption process. We expect to adopt the deer at a deer farm or zoo, and we will make efforts to ensure that the deer is adopted without being euthanized.” .

Before being caught, this deer hit two citizens with its antlers and injured them. At around 5:22 a.m. on the 6th, a report was received that “a woman had her leg injured by a deer antler” on the Gwanggyo Reservoir trail in Jangan-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do. Earlier, at around 1 a.m. on the same day, a deer appeared at Gwanggyo Lake Park in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon-si, about 6km away, and stabbed a citizen named Choi (33), who was on his way home, with its antlers.

Suwon City is pursuing a plan to pay medical expenses through citizen safety insurance for two citizens who were attacked by a deer and suffered injuries to their abdomen and legs. Citizen Safety Insurance is a system in which insurance companies contracted with the city pay insurance benefits to citizens who have suffered a fire or safety accident, and can receive support of up to 1 million won for medical expenses such as treatment, surgery, and hospitalization expenses.

In addition to Suwon, deer have recently appeared one after another in nearby Uiwang and Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do. Experts believe that deer raised on deer farms escaped from the farms during competition for mates, as winter is the mating season for deer.

Han Sang-hoon, director of the Korean Peninsula Wildlife Research Institute, said, “During the winter, the mating period, male deer secrete a lot of adrenaline. If the distance is close to 10 to 20 meters, deer perceive them as enemies and become more aggressive, so if you spot a deer, report it to the fire department or local government. “You have to hide behind a large structure,” he said.
