The construction of bicycle paths in Subotica and the surrounding area continues this year and next year from the cross-border funds of the European Union. Through the “Opti bike 3” project, by 2026, by the end of the project, a total of 4,226 meters of bicycle path will be built, namely 2.8 kilometers between the settlements Bački Vinogradi and Hajdukovo to Mali Pijace, then the village in the municipality of Kanjiža, and on the Kanjiška road on Palić. The details of this project were discussed by Daniel Đivanović, the President of the City Assembly, who presented the information that the total value of this project is 2.3 million euros, the European Union’s donation is 1.99 million euros, of which it is for the construction of trails in Subotica and its surroundings. intended for 1.189 million euros. The city of Subotica, which is obliged to finance 15 percent of the project’s value from our side, allocated 209,000 euros for this.

In addition to the construction of a bicycle path over 4.2 kilometers long as part of this project, Đivanović explained, a bicycle stop with an interactive board, three service points for cyclists and two bicycle counters will be installed. At the same time, a mobile application for cyclists with data on the tourist offer of the region will be developed, and the project will be promoted through several events with the aim of presenting the tourist offer to the general public, as well as cycling as a way of life.

Given that this is a cross-border project, Subotica’s partner is the Hungarian city of Tompa, where the plan is to build a 1,553-meter-long bicycle path along regional road number 53. There will also be a bicycle stop with an interactive board, two service stations points for cyclists and two cyclist counters.

Until the beginning of the “Opti bike” project a few years ago, Subotica had 25 kilometers of built bicycle paths, and after the completion of the “Opti bike 3” project, it will receive another 13 kilometers of paths for two-wheelers in which the European Union has invested over two million euros, reminded Akoš Ujhelji. , SVM representative and project manager of this investment. He stated that in the first project, 7.9 kilometers of bicycle path were built towards the Bački Vinograd and Kelebija border crossings, when Subotica received 688,000 euros in a project with a total value of 2.5 million euros. During the continuation through “Opti bike 2”, a kilometer and a half of tracks worth 200,000 euros were built.

The construction of bicycle paths has multiple significance: the paths around Subotica are included in the international bicycle route “EvroVelo 13”, which starts from the coasts of Northern Europe and extends all the way to the Black Sea. It also passes through Hungary and Serbia, which is an opportunity for cyclists to explore the natural beauty of this region, but also to get to know its historical, architectural and cultural heritage. Connecting the vastness of Europe with bicycle paths aims to get to know its landscapes, promote tourism and bicycle sports. The construction of trails in our region simultaneously simplifies and speeds up cross-border traffic, which is mostly used by the local population.
