Continental’s new technology displays content in a spectacular way on the side windows of vehicles – technocrat

Thanks to the technology, owners can project content onto the rear side windows of their car, which thus becomes visible from the outside as well. When the vehicle is parked, it can communicate directly with its surroundings, such as displaying the charge level of the electric vehicle or even the logo of the owner’s favorite sports club. Content can be easily customized. The system requires a high-performance mini projector, an electrically dimmable side window that functions as a projection surface, and intelligent software.

“With our Window Projection solution, we can project content on the side windows of the car in impressive quality, which can be customized according to the driver’s lifestyle, thereby strengthening the attachment to the brand,” explained Pavel Prouza, Continental’s head of user experience.

Excellent image quality, compact projection technology

The visual experience is provided by an intelligent projection screen. For optimal image display, when the system is activated, the window darkens electrically, and a space-saving projector unit built into the car’s headliner projects the content onto the side window. The special feature of the projection visible from the outside is that it displays the content in extremely high resolution directly on the window glass. In addition, the installation of the mini projector requires less than 500 cubic centimeters of space.

“The system can be easily integrated into the roof covering as it requires very little space. Our engineers are already working on improved, even more compact versions of the system,” added Prouza.

Always relevant content: intelligent personalization with eTravel.companion

eTravel.companion works as a software component of the window projection solution. The AI-based travel assistant creates new user experiences based on driving habits, geographic and weather data, as well as information from the vehicle’s sensors. During the development of the software, Continental collaborated with the platform provider banbutsu, whose digital ecosystem provides an interface for context-based and personalized content. The software generates real-time recommendations based on user preferences and the current situation, which are displayed on the rear windows before boarding.

For example, the vehicle recognizes if the driver is on his way to a match of his favorite team and the software already suggests displaying the team’s logo or other customized content on the window. The intelligent solution can also display the vehicle’s charge level and route information.

“With our personalized recommendations and easy integration of new partners and content, our platform provides a personal and unique user experience. And in cooperation with Continental, we are building the technology into the vehicles,” said Michael Wolters, managing director of banbutsu.
