Controversial display maker BOE is trying to woo Apple

Apple devices come with excellent displays that are exclusively sourced by the companies Samsung and LG. But another display maker, Chinese company BOE, has been trying to win Apple’s heart for years. Now, BOE has designed an OLED screen which displays richer colors than either Samsung or LG were able to do.

BOE’s new OLED prototype has succeeded BT 2020’s whopping 95%. In simpler terms, the new screens displayed some very rich colors.

For comparison, Samsung’s OLED panels can achieve 90% of BT 2020 and LG’s panels can only achieve 70%. While it hasn’t been confirmed that this panel is ready for mass production, BOE’s new OLED technology could eventually tempt Apple to switch suppliers.

Apple has previously given BOE a few opportunities to join the company’s supply chain, mainly because existing suppliers were allegedly overcharging. But, for some reason, the BOE keeps screwing up every time.

You see some years ago, BOE was supposed to supply a large part of the displays for the iPhone 14, but then the company faced a shortage of parts and decided to resort to new designs to covertly fill the gap. Apple, understandably, canceled the deal when it found out.

BOE was then given a second chance to supply displays for the iPhone 15, but struggled to make the cutouts for the camera and sensors. So Apple was forced to cancel those orders as well, having once again relied on Samsung.

In addition to all these misfortunes, Samsung sought an import ban against BOE, claiming that BOE had infringed Samsung’s intellectual property. All these factors together have so far not let BOE become part of Apple’s supply chain.

But, let’s be honest, there’s a reason why apple keeps letting BOE try... if the Chinese tech giant can start reliably supplying Apple with great displays at a lower cost, then surely Apple will switch suppliers directly!
