(Jeju = Newsis) Reporter Woo Jang-ho = Jeju City has decided to hold the Wildfire Festival, Jeju’s representative festival, by replacing ‘Lighting Oreum Fire’, a core content, with media art and a variety of programs.
Jeju City announced on the 13th that it will hold the ‘2025 Jeju Wildfire Festival’ under the theme ‘We, Burn Hope’ in the Saebyeol Oreum area of Aewol-eup for three days from March 14th to 16th.
The city plans to prepare for the Wildfire Festival according to its own basic plan, which was established through a review process including the results of last year’s citizen planning group discussions, a national content contest, and collection of opinions from advisory groups.
Previously, in order to find a new direction for the festival, the city had been considering not holding a festival last year and replacing it with lights and lighting instead of setting fire directly on the mountain.
In the process, the Jeju Island Council passed the ‘Jeju Island Ordinance on Support for the First Full Moon Fire Festival’, a residents’ request ordinance that leaves open the possibility of ‘lighting Oreum fires’ through the plenary session, sparking controversy again.
In relation to this, the city plans to maintain the festival tradition with the theme of ‘fire’, which symbolizes Jeju’s pastoral culture and protection, although there will be no ‘lighting fire on Oreum’. The explanation is that by adding media art and performances by artists, ‘comfort, hope, and emotion’ will be delivered to residents and tourists.
We will develop and operate experience content linking historical and cultural resources, such as Jeju’s pastoral culture, and conduct ecological experience programs such as oreum trekking by opening Saebyeol Oreum, which was previously controlled for setting fires, at all times.
(Jeju = Newsis) Reporter Woo Jang-ho = Jeju Mayor Kim Wan-geun is explaining the direction of holding the ‘2025 Jeju Wildfire Festival’ in the press room on the second floor of Jeju City Hall on the morning of the 17th. The ‘2025 Jeju Wildfire Festival’ will be held in the Saebyeol Oreum area of Aewol-eup for three days from March 14th to 16th under the theme ‘We, Burn Hope.’ 2025.01.13. To improve vehicle congestion at the festival site, we plan to add a shuttle bus route and create a clean festival site by operating two recycling help centers, garbage collection vehicles, and sprinkler trucks within the festival site.
Jeju Mayor Kim Wan-geun said, “As the 2025 Jeju Wildfire Festival is the first year to attempt new changes, we ask for the interest and support of all residents so that it can become a place of hope and harmony that represents Jeju.”
