Former Prime Minister António Costa wished Maria Luís Albuquerque well as European Commissioner, but declined to comment on criticisms of the Government’s lack of dialogue in this choice because now all he hears about is national politics.
“I have heard these criticisms, but now I only hear about national politics,” he said.
António Costa returned to a PS initiative and participated in the Socialist Academy dinner, which took place in Tomar, Santarém, having been welcomed upon arrival by the PS secretary-general, Pedro Nuno Santos, who also joined this event today for the first time, on the eve of the party’s `rentrée´.
“It is the Government’s choice. I can only wish her the best of luck”, he responded to journalists when asked about the PSD/CDS-PP Government’s choice of Maria Luís Albuquerque as European Commissioner.
Regarding criticism from the opposition, including the PS, that the executive’s choice was made without dialogue with the other parties, the president-elect of the European Council declined to make any comment.
Asked if he had any advice to give Pedro Nuno Santos about the State Budget process for 2025, António Costa simply said: “the secretary-general leads my party and I follow my leader”.
