Citing a source close to the American star, they said that there is a certain chance that the 39-year-old Vonn will try to make a comeback to the World Cup this season. On Friday, October 18, he will celebrate his fortieth birthday.
The eight-time winner of the overall SP classification and gold medalist from the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada, ended her career in February 2019. At that time, she declared that her body was so damaged that it was no longer possible to adjust it to the level of a top skier.
She was particularly troubled by the pains of her knees, which had been operated on several times. In April, she underwent another surgery in which doctors replaced the damaged parts of her knee with titanium. Since then, she has been successfully recovering and her knee is unexpectedly doing well. She even received the green light from the doctors to return to skiing.
Vonn was skiing in New Zealand, where she explained it by shooting a campaign for Red Bull. Later, however, she appeared on a glacier near Sölden, where the new year of the World Cup will begin at the end of October.
At the same time, this location is not a traditional place where advertising campaigns are produced, so there were speculations in the media whether the American wanted to return.
Vonn is one of the best female skiers of all time. She won 82 races in the World Cup, and at the time of her retirement from skiing, she was only four triumphs short of tying the absolute record held by Swede Ingemar Stenmark at the time.
In the meantime, compatriot Mikaela Shiffrinová, who also broke Stenmark’s record and currently has 97 wins in the SP, took her place as the most successful skier in the history of the SP.
Vonnová could return to the World Cup thanks to the new possibility of wild cards granted by the FIS for individual races.
These cards are intended for successful skiers who are returning after a long break. Eight-time winner of the series Austrian Marcel Hirscher, who is returning in Dutch colors after five years, received a wild card for the opening giant slalom of the WC in Sölden.
