Couple detained in Lisbon for damaging bus and attacking driver

A couple was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of qualified damage to a Carris bus, in Lisbon, and qualified physical harm against the driver, subject to identity and residence conditions, according to the PSP.

According to a statement from the security force, during the normal course of a career, the couple, a 53-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman, spoke out loud about their intention to commit crimes in Lisbon, so the driver “requested respect for other passengers” and highlighted that there were children on board.

The suspects reacted with “aggressive and intimidating behavior” and verbalized “xenophobic content”, followed by a physical attack on the driver using a Canadian woman.

The driver unsuccessfully tried to expel them from the bus, but ended up locking the doors to wait for the arrival of the PSP, who were on their way to the location after being alerted.

To escape from inside the bus, the couple broke one of the windows, but were quickly located and detained by agents, and two knives were seized from their possession.

The driver suffered minor injuries to his arm, according to police.

The coercive measure was determined after the detainees were brought before the judicial authority and the case was sent for investigation.

The term of identity and residence consists of identifying the person and indicating their residence, as well as the obligation to appear before the authorities whenever there is a notification.

The suspect cannot change residence or be absent for more than five days without communicating the place where he can be found.
