Creativity depends on a certain inner hygiene, for me. Her biggest enemy is the inner critic

For the director Teodora Petrescrolling through social media isn’t creativity’s best friend like going out to a theater show or a movie. He likes artists who reinvent simplicity, and lately he’s consumed a lot of Ai Weiwei, Ivo Van Hove and David Hockney.

“I thought for a long time that it was something strictly related to art and the condition of an artist. When I graduated from the theater faculty and found that no magic happened overnight, that I don’t suddenly have a thousand brilliant ideas per minute, I had to reconsider this idea”, says Teodora.

She is inspired by documenting before starting a project, but ideas also come from being out in the world, from a simple walk in the park to viewing an art exhibition. Something to broaden his horizons even more. Therapy is also part of the steps that must be taken to overcome creative blocks.

Personal definition of creativity

For me, creativity is a feeling of total freedom, when I feel like I can finally hear my true thoughts and desires, that I know exactly what the next step is, it doesn’t matter if it’s the right one or not, it’s just important to- I do it, it becomes almost a necessity.

How the perspective on creativity has changed

I thought for a long time that it was something strictly related to art and the condition of an artist. When I graduated from theater school and realized that no magic happened overnight, that I don’t suddenly have a thousand brilliant ideas a minute, I had to reconsider that idea. I’ve found that it can exist in the way I cook, think, organize my home or tend a plant, it’s up to me how I choose to channel it and to what degree.

Habits, shortcuts, recipes

Creativity depends on a certain inner hygiene, for me. Her biggest enemy is the inner critic. If he can be silenced, then ideas are free to flow through my mind. So my recipes to invoke it are sport, sleep, good people and healthy food.

What came with the experience

It really depends on the project I’m working on. I learned to realize as quickly as possible which projects really appeal to me and which ones don’t. If I make the right choice, inspiration will not be difficult to find, even if I have to step out of my comfort zone.

How do you train your creativity?

The documentation period before starting a project is what inspires me the most. The better I document myself before rehearsals begin, the better I “see” the show and its potential for development. Otherwise, I’m sure that getting out in the world is the best exercise, and by this I mean anything from a simple walk in the park to seeing an art exhibition. Anything has the potential to broaden our horizons a bit.

Courses, workshops, events to inspire you

There have been many theater performances, films or art exhibitions that have inspired me, so yes, I still support “going out into the world” as a stimulus for inspiration.

But online: what are the sources of inspiration?

I waste time on Pinterest from time to time, like everyone else, and I’m not ashamed of Instagram either. I don’t know if they can be called sources of inspiration, but I think that these are superficial solutions, you find something that someone else did and copy it exactly, which is perfectly normal and even useful in certain situations, we all do it. I’ve never felt inspired after a healthy scroll through Instagram like I do after seeing a good theater performance, for example.

The obstacles to creativity

If I don’t take care of myself, if I waste too much time on social media, or if I don’t manage to do the things that help me be better with myself in my everyday life, it’s pretty hard for me to be the most creative version of myself mine. That voice that argues with me, that says “not like that”, “you’re not allowed” or “what a stupid thing you did” is getting louder and louder. Therapy is another very good remedy.

What happens when you have stuck moments

It helps me a lot to get up and let it all go for a few minutes, an hour, a day. To go do something else or just relax. Most of the time, when I go back, I see things much more clearly and it takes me very little time to find a solution.

AI, Social Media and Creativity

I was very surprised to see what AI can do with very little information. It can provide us with surprising solutions in a fairly short time. However, I guess that’s called the AI being creative, not us. As for Social Media, I don’t know about others, but I’ve felt that it only flattens my thoughts and numbs my senses, things that inhibit any shred of creativity.

The creative fields of recent years

I think most fields have and have always had constant growth, the question is which ones are the most visible, the most obvious, the most talked about or the most effective, today, when we are so bombarded with news and new information. It’s a big challenge trying to filter them out. For example, it seems to me that we are experiencing a culinary revolution. It seems to me that every day there are more and more food combinations, the restaurants are more and more diverse, and the quality has also increased along with the creativity. If you have the patience to research this area, even if only in Bucharest, you will have many pleasant surprises.

Do you have a role model?

I really appreciate artists who seem to reinvent simplicity. Which leaves me with the feeling that that idea is available to everyone, but at the same time that no one else could have seen it that way. Lately I’ve been consuming a lot of Ai Weiwei, Ivo Van Hove and David Hockney.

Tool-uri creative

The books. Any book, just a book. Read a lot and in abundance, anywhere and anytime. It works wonders.
