Early this morning, Windows-based systems around the world began crashing and displaying the classic Blue Screen of Death error. The problem was found to be caused not by Microsoft, but by a faulty software update pushed to these systems by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.
CrowdStrike CEO gave his first TV interview since the incident today on NBC’s Today program and explained what had happened. First of all, he expressed his deepest sorrow to everyone affected by this. Kurtz said the company has now fixed the issue and CrowdStrike is working with each customer to get them back online. Later in the interview, he admitted that “it may take some time to get some systems back up and running that won’t automatically recover.” However, he added, “we won’t give up until we get every customer back up and running.”
This massive Windows system outage, caused by a faulty software update from CrowdStrike, is already being called the largest IT-based outage in history by many. Among other things, it disrupted operations for major Turkish companies such as Turkish Airlines, Ziraat Bank, Türk Telekom, and Turkcell. Two hospitals in Germany announced that they were canceling surgeries scheduled for today, and UK-based grocery chain Waitrose temporarily suspended contactless payments.
As Technopat, we have also closely examined this IT-based outage and suggested various solutions. We hope that the necessary precautions will be taken to prevent the same situation from happening again.
