The story of the murder of just a few days old girl Melek, which shook Austria last week, is a much bigger tragedy than was initially anticipated. According to the latest information, the girl was not a victim of postpartum depression – but an honor killing.
The police, doctors, nurses and everyone who participated in the search operation for several hours on Thursday are in shock and cannot get over the death of the 10-day-old baby, who was allegedly killed by her mother.
The little girl was born much too early
The newborn was born way too early and the clinic staff had to nurse her and keep her alive with all their strength and love. The girl’s will to live was so strong that she overcame the difficult beginning of her life. But despite her struggle, she did not live to see a happy ending. As we previously reported, Melek disappeared from her cot in the premature baby unit at the Favoriten clinic on Thursday morning. After an extensive search, she was found dead on Friday.
The theory of an unknown abductor was soon disproved
The investigation soon focused on her mother, a 30-year-old Turkish woman, and rumors of postpartum depression spread among the public. But soon after, a horrible suspicion arose. The baby was thrown in the trash. After an extensive search operation, the terrible truth came to light. The 30-year-old woman could not withstand the police interrogations and pressure and led the detectives to a yellow garbage container outside the hospital area. The first conclusion of the investigators upon viewing the body was that Melek died overnight in a dark, icy container. An autopsy performed on Sunday morning, however, revealed an even more gruesome truth. The girl was brutally beaten, she suffered a severe head and brain injury due to repeated blows with a blunt object.
The girl was not the victim of her mother’s postpartum depression, as was initially believed, but rather the victim of an honor killing.
Murdered for “injured honor”
It is becoming increasingly clear that the girl died not because of the mother’s depression, but because of the “injured honor” of the men in the Turkish family. The mother, who remains in custody, and the father, Melek, were not married, and the child was apparently unwanted in the community, Today, the newspaper Kronen Zeitung reports that the investigators are now focusing on three questions: Where was the crime scene? Where did the black plastic bag come from? which one was the dead child wrapped in? These types of bags are not used in hospital premises. They are also investigating whether the mother was alone or if someone else was involved, although the 30-year-old woman admitted to the murder, citing “family problems” as the motive. “.
Heute reports that the girl’s 28-year-old father, a Turkish citizen, was also seen in the clinic before the girl’s disappearance, who was in her room and crying over her bed.
