A survey shows that a clear majority of Germans are aware of the risks of shopping on the discount marketplace Temu. But many continue to shop there despite bad experiences.
It sounds paradoxical: More than two thirds of German buyers know that products purchased on the online platform Temu often do not comply with European regulations. This affects issues such as product safety, permissible ingredients or occupational health and safety. Despite this, 51 percent want to continue shopping on the Chinese platform, and only seven percent of respondents are turning away. This was the result of a representative survey conducted by GfK for the ZVEI association.
The main reason for shopping at Temu is the low price. The risks are evidently accepted, as a whopping 40 percent of users surveyed have had bad experiences with the online platform. For 15 percent of buyers, products broke quickly and for one in ten, they didn’t work at all.
Temu is also increasingly affecting domestic companies. In a recent ZVEI survey of members of the consumer industry, 72 percent said they were already affected by market activities in Europe. Almost all companies (92 percent) also assume that the situation will become even worse due to such online platforms. They see the lack of product safety (92 percent) and conformity (80 percent) as particularly problematic, as well as the sale of products containing prohibited substances (64 percent).
