Czech city car celebrates 25th anniversary

Presented in 1999, the Škoda Fabia is now celebrating its 25th anniversary. The famous Czech city car has since sold almost five million units.

It has now been a quarter of a century since the Shame Fabio was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 14, 1999.

Škoda Fabia: a successful city car

Replacement for the Škoda Felicia, the First generation Škoda Fabia (1999 – 2008) was launched in 1999 as a five-door saloon, measuring 3.96 metres in length. A station wagon version was added to the range a year later, and a saloon with a boot appeared in 2001. The styling of the Fabia I was designed by the teams of Dirk van Braeckel, Škoda’s Design Director at the time. In 2003, the range was completed by the sporty RS version, powered by a 1.9 TDI turbo diesel engine with 130 horsepower.
In March 2007, the second generation Škoda Fabia (2007 – 2014) was presented, this time at the Geneva Motor Show. It is based on the same PQ24 platform as the first opus, but becomes longer (+22 mm) and higher (+47 mm). An estate version joins the catalog in September 2007, followed in 2009 by a Scout variant, as well as a sports RS version, powered by a 1.4 TSI turbocharged gasoline engine of 180 horsepower. The Fabia II also offered, for the first time, the Monte Carlo version.

A model noted in motorsport

In October 2014, the Third generation Škoda Fabia (2014 – 2022) debuted at the Paris Motor Show. It is based on the most modern PQ26 platform, and its styling has evolved to adopt more modern and dynamic lines: the car is 90 mm wider and 30 mm lower. Many safety and comfort technologies have appeared, such as the Front Assist system, adaptive cruise control or the driver fatigue monitoring system.
In spring 2021, the fourth and current generation of Fabia was presented: this five-door saloon is based on the MQB A0 platform, and its style is signed by the teams of Oliver Stefani, the Head of Design at Škoda. With 380 litres, its boot is 50 litres more generous than the previous generation, and it includes many technologies such as Travel Assist 2.0, Automatic Parking, Lane Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Side Assist as well as Front Assist with predictive protection of pedestrians and cyclists.
Throughout its history, the Škoda Fabia has distinguished itself as sport automobilewith the first generation Fabia WRC (2003), the Škoda Fabia Super 2000 (2009), or the Škoda Fabia WRC2 (2015). With 470 units of the Fabia Rally2 and Rally2 evo sold, it is the best-selling rally car to date.

The fourth-generation Fabia serves as the basis for the Škoda Fabia RS Rally2, which is entered in national and international championships.
