There is a secret connection: Sand dunes and ocean waves
In the first two weeks of this year, two of the biggest global sports events are taking place on the stage, which are completely different but at the same time very similar in their conceptual basis.
Vendee Globe, sailing regatta for singles around the world and Dakar rally in the deserts of Saudi Arabia.
The Vendée Globe and the Dakar Rally are two races that take place at opposite ends of the world, and seem to have nothing to do with each other. While solo skippers battle hurricane-force winds and 20-foot waves, Dakar drivers fly their motorcycles, cars and trucks at breakneck speed over the sand dunes and boulders of the Arabian Peninsula.
Made in France
Done incompatible two sports, who nevertheless share a deep connection. Especially the conceptual, spiritual one.
Both races are originated in Franceand they should be viewed in the context of their culture, which highly encourages pushing one’s own boundaries, allows stepping out of the box, and encourages stepping out of the comfort zone.
The Dakar Rally and the Vendee Globe represent the ultimate test of the human spirit, physical capabilities and mental strength, and the advancement of technology.
Regardless of whether the contestants are battling with the southern seas, which are especially wild this year, or the endless sand dunes of Saudi Arabia, they are always faced with the same essential challenge: overcoming the cruelty of nature and their own limitations.
Although the environments are completely different, the conditions in which these two races take place are equally extreme.
On the ocean, skippers battle storms, high waves, currents and complete isolation from the world.
In the desert, drivers face extreme temperatures, sandstorms, unpredictable obstacles and the risk of mechanical breakdowns far from any civilization. In both cases, competitors are left to fend for themselves, relying solely on their own skills, knowledge and equipment.
A.S.O.
Who is more difficult and challenging?
The sailors will tell us, because we are alone in the open ocean, without sleep, movement and quality food for 90 days.
Dakar drivers will say, to us, because driving on rock and sand and over 120 kilometers per hour in a car in which it is over 50C, we don’t know what is behind the next dune, what awaits us on the rockery,…
The truth is somewhere in the middle
Vendée Globe and Dakar Rally are more than sports competitions. These are journeys into the depths of ourselves, during which we face our fears and limitations. In those extreme conditions, where man feels so small and helpless, a strange strength and resilience is born.
Skippers and drivers are more than sportsmen, they are researchers, philosophers, and sometimes barely survived.
It is a life on the edge where every second brings new challenges and where one learns that the greatest victory is not measured in seconds, but it is over oneself.
