The coach of the CFR Cluj team, Dan Petrescu, who received three times the proposal to be the Romanian national team coach, reiterated that he does not want the position. “Iordănescu did fantastic things with the national team, it seems to me that the whole country is united around him. Which makes me very happy. They made a national team that we are all proud of, they made a spirit, they say the ‘soul generation’, which fits perfectly. I think he is the best man to continue. I didn’t expect it, but he knows best. I didn’t expect him not to stay, because he did an excellent job and I think he could qualify the team for the World Cup,” Petrescu declared.
As far as he is concerned, Petrescu said that he has just taken over the CFR Cluj team and that he is not tempted to accept a possible proposal from the FRF.
“Whoever comes will have to start from scratch, because the pressure will be high. He got the most out of the national team. I was offered at least three times, once I was at CFR, once at Dinamo Moscow, once at Kuban, but it never happened. I said that when I retire, or before I retire, this would be my dream, to coach the national team. But now, being at CFR, I barely signed the contract. I think if I was out of contract, I was interested. I think an experienced coach would be needed, even if I have nothing against young coaches. But I don’t see a young coach at the national team, I see an experienced coach. But I still hope that Edi will continue, because he deserves it and the national team needs him now”, said Petrescu.
The contract of the selector Edward Iordănescu is due at the end of July. Both the representatives of the Romanian Football Federation and Iordănescu have stated on several occasions that they will sign the contract extension before EURO 2024, but this did not happen.
