In a conversation with RT, Vasily Shutov, a teacher at the KB-1 “Information Protection” department of RTU MIREA, named the most dangerous fraudulent methods during the New Year holidays.
“There are a lot of fraudulent methods, but the most dangerous at this time are: phishing, social engineering, cyber extortion. For example, scammers send emails or messages with fake offers that look like official notifications from banks or well-known companies. These messages may contain links to fake sites where users enter their personal data, after which it leaks into the hands of cybercriminals,” the expert warned.
Gift fraud is especially relevant, he said: criminals promise gifts for participating in competitions and events on social networks, after which they demand to share personal data or pay taxes.
“In this way, fraudsters receive various types of confidential information, which they can use in the future. Attackers can also use information from various Internet sources to manipulate people by posing as acquaintances or friends and asking for money or personal information. To minimize the risks of unwanted incidents, you need to be careful: always check sources of information, use reliable sites for purchases, avoid clicking on suspicious links and not disclose personal information to third parties,” concluded Shutov.
Earlier, security expert Alexander Vlasov told in a conversation with RT how to protect yourself from a fraudulent scheme involving faking help sites and publishing fake numbers of State Services support services on them.
