The composer from Martorell Daniel Gasulla has won the 4th edition of the Sardana d’Agramunt Composition Competition with a creation called Tremessèn i Delfina inspired by the giants of this Urgellen population. Gasulla thus takes home an award and a cash prize of 1,000 euros. On Friday evening, the winner of the award was revealed in an event held at the Teatre Casal Agramuntí.
During the event, the Cobla Jovenívola from Agramunt performed both the theme composed by Gasulla and the other finalist: the sardana The artists’ vineyardby the composer David Esterri, artistically known as ‘The Rock Sparrow’, who took home 500 euros.
“It is a composition without too many harmonic pretensions. I wanted to change the way a little in terms of the music I present at contests”, says Gasulla of his piece. The sardana bets on the traditions of Agramunt and talks about its giants: the Tremessèn and the Delfina. It is based “on his dance of giants, very musical and easily adaptable to Cobla”.

The two finalist sardanas were chosen from among eight candidates by a jury that assessed “the overall composition, originality and instrumentation”. Gasulla says he feels very satisfied: “Winning the prize is much more important than it seems, because in this competition I was not lucky enough to be a finalist, it’s the first time I’ve been there and it’s a pleasure that your music is appreciated in this way “.

And he adds that the other finalist made “a very interesting sardonic adaptation. David is an artist closely linked to Lleida, and among other things, he created the song ‘Soc de l’Oest'”, a song that is a popular anthem of the Terres de Ponent and which has been covered by numerous groups subsequently.

Apart from this creation, Gasulla has other projects in hand. One of them is to continue shaping and updating a show with Cobla Mediterrània. A montage called ‘Travel around the world with Cobla’, with “a baritone, a soprano and a percussionist, and where a visit is made to other countries to listen to opera music, from jazzof soundtracks…an interesting project that has always had great acceptance”.

Right now, the composer from Martorell is promoting this production and confesses that “I would really like to be able to bring it to Martorell and that my friends, family and villagers could listen to it and enjoy it”.
