A new report from the Academy of Technical Sciences concludes that the great shortage of trained IT specialists will weaken Denmark’s competitiveness.
At ScanNet, which is part of the tech giant team.blue, the development is viewed with concern.
There is a great shortage of highly trained IT specialists in Danish business, and therefore the country’s companies are at great risk of falling behind in technological development and thereby losing competitiveness. This is stated by a new report from the independent think tank Akademiet for de Tekniske Widenskaber, which also shows that Denmark currently occupies 20th place in the EU when measuring the level of education for IT experts.
With ScanNetwhich is IT giant team.blue’s professional IT infrastructure brand, is seriously concerned about the acute shortage of IT workforce. Therefore, the company is carefully considering how they can support their customers in this challenging situation.
– In the short term, we already see that many of the customers and partners we work with are finding it difficult to recruit and retain the IT workforce they need. It can be, for example, companies in smaller cities or small to medium-sized companies, where key employees often change to larger and more specialized IT companies, says Lotte Bendstrup, CEO of team.blue and continues:
– The development is serious, and if we in Denmark do not take care of the situation, we risk falling far behind in the IT race. We recognize that it is a huge task for companies to find solutions to these problems, and therefore we feel a strong obligation to support them. We want to be an extension of their team when they need IT specialists. In order to deliver this support effectively, it is crucial that we have skilled and competent employees in our own organisation.
Labor market researcher
Christian Lyhne Ibsen, who is Associate Professor at the Research Center for Labor Market and Organizational Studies at the Department of Sociology at the University of Copenhagen, describes the development as critical for Danish companies.
– In the short term, this means that Danish business will compete more for labour, including by offering higher wages. This may ultimately affect competitiveness. There may also be some companies which in the short term have to say no to orders if they do not have the necessary employees – including IT employees – to carry out tasks, says Christian Lyhne Ibsen, who has an idea of how the problem can solved:
– The structural solution in Denmark is to train more IT people, but it takes time to get more study places, which has been a problem. And it also takes time to train the students.
You have to think outside the box
According to Lotte Bendstrup, a possible solution for the companies lies in circumventing the problems, and this is a path that ScanNet itself has chosen to follow.
– For small and medium-sized companies, it can be advantageous to think outside the box and consider a different strategy than hiring heavy IT skills. For example, they can choose to outsource the heavier IT operations and instead employ a newly trained IT supporter to take care of the daily support and dialogue with the supplier, says Lotte Bendstrup and elaborates on the way in which ScanNet itself handles the challenge:
– In order to be able to meet the demand for operational services – also from existing customers who have previously taken care of this type themselves – we have strengthened the focus on upskilling our employees and creating opportunities for them to step into specialist roles. It is an effort that we will continue to invest in and thus boost the employees’ professional toolbox.
