High data and telephone traffic at the turn of the year
Telekom’s mobile network was under particularly high load at the turn of the year: the data volume increased significantly and the number of telephone calls also increased significantly. Telekom draws a positive conclusion from New Year’s Eve.
According to Telekom, the data volume in the mobile network increased significantly during New Year’s Eve. Between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. a total of more than 2,900 terabytes of data flowed through the network – an increase of 30 percent compared to the previous year. The heaviest traffic was recorded in the first hour of the new year. What was particularly noticeable was that the proportion of data uploaded was higher than usual. Despite the sharp increase, operations ran smoothly.
Telephone calls at record levels
In addition to the increased data volume, Telekom also reported an increase in telephone calls. A total of twelve million conversations were held on New Year’s Eve – one million more than the previous year. The majority of calls took place between midnight and 1 a.m., when many people exchanged New Year’s greetings. During this time, the number of calls was around 20 times higher than on a normal night.
Berlin is at the top of the city ranking
A look at the city ranking reveals little that is surprising: the cities with the largest populations recorded the highest levels of activity. Berlin was the front runner, followed by Hamburg and Munich. Cologne and Frankfurt took fourth and fifth place. Particularly worth mentioning: Bielefeld reached tenth place in terms of telephone calls made – a humorous allusion to the well-known “Bielefeld conspiracy” meme.
Stable number of emergency calls at the turn of the year
On New Year’s Eve, around 70,000 emergency calls were received via Telekom’s networks – a figure on a par with the previous year. The highest number of emergency calls was recorded between 12:15 a.m. and 12:20 a.m., when up to ten emergency calls were reported per second.
Network monitoring around the clock
To ensure network stability, Telekom continuously monitors its network. The team is strengthened, especially on public holidays and at the turn of the year, to ensure smooth operations.
